The Dacia Sandero might be a more appropriate choice if you need more space and more speed. It’s a 1.0 litre, 5-door car and the bi-fuel option is cheap to buy and cheap to run. The bi-fuel uses petrol and liquid petroleum gas (LPG), which contributes to the lower running costs thanks to its efficiency.
Dacia states that with eh bi-fuel option, drivers can enjoy 40% savings in fuel costs and a 60% increase in driving range. Auto Express puts the per mile running cost at 40.65p and the total cost over three years at £12,169.
Toyota Aygo X
The Toyota Aygo X is a powerful but compact hatchback, and a great economical choice. It’s a 1.0 litre, 5 door car that offers 58.9 mpg. It’s in one of the lowest car tax brackets available, with annual costs at £190. Per mile costs are estimated to be 40.83 p, with a total cost of £12,248 over three years.
Even being a small car, the Toyota Aygo X has great safety features, including the full range of Toyota’s Safety Sense tech. The vehicle scored four out of five stars in the Euro NCAP safety tests and there are six airbags throughout the inside. VW Up!
The VW Up! is a nippy, economical small car. Hyundai i10
The Hyundai i10 is a sporty but frugal city car. The 1.0 litre engine option offers 55.3 mpg, whereas the 1.2 litre offers 54.3mpg. The car is well constructed and reliable, with plenty of space, making it a great choice for families.
Running costs can amount to around 41 p per mile, with a total cost of £12,246 over three years. The entry level model sits in insurance group 4, so is fairly cheap. Other models span through to group 10, so keeping to the lower end of the range.
